Actor Amitabh Bachchan has issued a legal caution to a pan masala production company that has continued to air ads featuring him despite a contract cancellation. He announced his resignation from the Kamla Pasand campaign in October, citing a national anti-tobacco organization's request that he stop supporting a pan masala brand to help prevent young people from becoming addicted to cigarettes. Bachchan was also chastised on social media for the ad.
"It was learned from Mr Bachchan's office that a legal notice has been sent to Kamala Pasand, to stop broadcasting the TV commercials with Mr Bachchan immediately.. as it was noticed that despite the termination of the Endorsement agreement,'Kamala Pasand'is seen to continue Airing the TV Commercials," said a close source of the renowned actor.
Bachchan announced his retirement from the ad campaign on his 79th birthday, stating he had no knowledge it was considered as surrogate advertising. Surrogate advertising is defined as a sort of commercial that promotes forbidden things such as cigarettes, tobacco, and alcohol under the cover of another product.
"Kamala Pasand..." says the narrator. Mr. Bachchan contacted the brand a few days after the commercial aired and stepped down last week. When the reason for this abrupt change was investigated, it was discovered that when Mr. Bachchan became affiliated with the brand, he was unaware that it fell under the category of surrogate advertising. Mr Bachchan has ended his contract with the Brand, contacted them to inform them of his decision, and returned the money received for the promotion." read a statement from the actor's representative
A few days before the announcement, the actor responded to a person on social media who questioned his decision. At the time, he explained his position by arguing that it was a component of the entertainment business, which employs a large number of people.
